I wish I could go more often. I do not really put it off other than the cost. We do not have dental insurance. We do know how it important it is to go and to also take care of your teeth though. Very good information for me and others who need to be more aware of how important it is to see a dentist.

You are so right about not being embarrassed about visiting a dentist for the first time in years. When I visited a dentist for the first time in over 20 years last February, she was sweet, helpful, and non-judgmental. I was able able to get my teeth repaired that day pain-free!

I needed this article to reinforce that it’s okay for me to go to my dentist…even though it’s been longer than I care to share since I’ve last been to one. Cost is a factor, but it is also the fact I’ve put it off for so long, I’m embarrassed to let anyone look in my mouth! Now I have a bit of ‘confidence’ to open up!!!

Jenny, you really should not feel embarrassed. There are so many things that happen in our lives and we postpone things, even as important as our health. The important thing is that you know and you will do something about it.

The most important thing is to take care of your teeth rather than worry about the moral aspect of the problem. The dentist is paid for his work, so no concerns there.

I’m nervous about going to the dentist. I haven’t been there in a while, and I’m thinking that it will be painful. I get a lot of negative comments about my teeth, but I’m so scared to go to the dentist.

James, don’t be scared. A good dentist will make you feel calm and comfortable and believe me, after you do have your work done, you will feel thousand times better and nobody can give you negative comments about your teeth anymore!

Very true! I thought for a long time that I didn’t need to go to the dentist even if I kept up with a daily hygiene routine. But when I decided to go I wasn’t so sure. Glad to know there are professionals that care for patients as friends and not open wallets!

Saying ‘aaahhh’ to a dentist will no longer be a problem. I am certain those who worried about foul breath and cavities have been soothingly re-assured to not worry about a year’s worth of flossing before visiting a dentist!!

This is an encouraging article for people like my wife who hate the thought of visiting the dentist. This article illustrates how dentists are trained to anticipate and counter those types of fears.

It’s good to know that there are dentists who really care about a patient’s natural anxiety about climbing into that long chair. Some dentists don’t even want to say one word to you and sometimes that even adds to the fears you may have

      January 6, 2013

Hi Gary. Yes, you are right. Some dentists don’t like to treat fearful patients. I believe it you give that extra effort and time to a patient to help them calm down and trust you, you have helped them tremendously.

Thanks for motivating me. I was thinking of a visit to a dentist for cleanup of entire mouth. Brown deposits were present between my teeth. I was hesitating actually. Now I will surely visit a dentist. Thanks for this line ” If there are any people in the world who understand oral health and their patients fully, it’s us, the dentists.”

I haven’t gone to the dentist for years because of the embarrasement of letting my teeth rot, but you’re right, dentists are professionals. My other concern has always been cost, because I’ve let my teeth get so bad that I need complete extraction and dentures, and I can’t afford it.

    • admin
      January 30, 2013

Hi Mike. I am sorry to hear that. Maybe you can find a dentist who will let you do payments. But don’t let it go because you don’t want to start experiencing pain, also I am sure you’ve got infection in your teeth if they are grossly decayed and that is not good for your health.

I wish informative articles like this had been available when I was younger. I’ve since lost all of my teeth due to neglect and my parents not teaching me the importance. These falsies are no fun :(

      February 6, 2013

Oh Mary, I do wish that was the case as well. I am sorry that you had to end up with dentures. They can never really be comfortable and have nearly the functions of our original teeth. That’s why as dentists, we always emphasize on good oral hygiene and doing everything possible saving the teeth as much as possible. I wish I was your dentist when you were younger!

My wife has not seen a dentist in 10 years and she has black and broken teeth. She is terrified of needles and has a panic attack everytime we have tried to go to the dentist, but she is embarassed for people to see her teeth just as this article stated. I wish I could find a way to get her to go. She is so scared of needles she gave birth naturally and refused all needles during delivery.

      February 22, 2013

Wow, Micheal. That is so difficult for her. Maybe is she can finally trust a dentist, she can calm down and see that it is ok and she will be fine. Sometimes, having the dentist prescribe a sedative will help as well. Let me know if I can be of any help.

I put off going to the dentist because every time I go,I receive a bill for way more than I had expected. The last time I went for a simple cleaning and ex-rays and receive a bill for a debridement.

    • admin
      March 15, 2013

Hi Cindy. Well it depends on when was the last time you went to your dentist. If you have been going to the dentist every six months and gotten a professional cleaning, then you wouldn’t need a debridement. Did you ask your dentist why you needed this and not just a cleaning?

I went to the dentist a few years back due to a tooth split. My experience with that dentist wasn’t very good for simple fact that during the surgery teeth fragments were going down my throat which caused a serious sore throat :(.

Every since then I haven’t went back to any dentist. I’m thinking maybe I should give it another try because I know I have some cavities.

      July 28, 2013

Mel, I am sorry to hear about your terrible experience, but don’t let that keep you from going to the dentist every 6 months and taking care of any problems that may arise early before it turns into something more serious. Do a little bit of research and find a good dentist.

I can definitely sympathize with people who are afraid to go to the dentist. Up until last year I hadn’t been for about 5 years. I had 16 teeth pulled when I was younger and this was a rather traumatic experience. It’s good to know that dentists are making a constant effort to make the customer more comfortable than in times in the past.

Jenny, I am so sorry to hear that you had such bad experience with having to pull 16 teeth. That would be traumatic to anyone! But I am glad you got yourself back on track to seeing your dentist and I hope you will have a much better experience.
